Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s rescue pups are important members of their family.

“I’ve got three [dogs] in this house now, so we basically have five children,” the Duke of Sussex gushed during an October 2022 conference call with WellChild Awards recipients. “I’ve got a black Labrador called Pula, a rescue beagle called Guy and we’ve got another rescue beagle called Mia. Between the three of them, they drudged around chasing the squirrels every day, but they are also emotional support dogs when they’re behaving.”

The Duchess of Sussex — who married Harry in 2018 — previously adopted Guy before her royal wedding. Shortly after the nuptials, the couple — who share son Archie, born in 2019, and daughter Lilibet, born in 2021 — adopted Pula together. Mia (full name Mamma Mia) completed their brood in August 2022.

“The duchess called me personally,” Shannon Keith, an animal rights lawyer who runs the Beagle Freedom Project, told the Los Angeles Times about the California native’s interest in adopting an older rescue pup from the organization. “She calls on my cell with no caller ID and says, ‘Hey Shannon, this is Meghan.’ We talked for 30 minutes, and I thought, ‘Is this Megan Fox?’”

After Meghan and Harry met Mia for the first time, they were certain that she was the paw-fect pet for their brood. “The duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her,’” Keith recalled to the outlet. “She was like ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want ones we can help who are older.’”

The attorney added: “[Harry’s] just like, ‘Well, we can’t leave yet because there’s something in that back house she needs. Does she have a favorite toy or something?’”

The Suits alum has long been an animal lover, adopting first pup Bogart in 2012 at the encouragement of Ellen DeGeneres. Us Weekly confirmed in November 2017 that Bogart was unable to join Meghan across the pond when she moved to pursue her relationship with Harry, due to the country’s strict pet laws.

“[Bogart] is a little rescue mutt from SPOT in L.A. and is 9 months old. He’s adorable,” the “Archetypes” podcast host previously told BuzzFeed in July 2013. “Ellen DeGeneres was there when I was looking at the time and told me I had to take him home. So I did.”

Amid Meghan’s U.K. move, Bogart remained stateside with one of the former actress’ pals, while Guy stayed by her side. The BetterUp CIO and the Daters’ Handbook star eventually moved to California in 2020 after stepping down from their roles as senior royals, expanding their furry family with Pula and Mia.

A Forever Friend

“Bogs is about three years old now and I started to see that he loves the company of people, but just like I love the company of dogs, I don’t want to be around solely dogs all day long so I realized he might like to have a companion,” the Bench author gushed to Canada’s Best Health magazine in May 2016 of adopting Guy. “A little over a year ago I looked for a small dog to be his buddy. “[Now,] I have Bogart and Guy. Guy is a beagle and 17 pounds. … They are thick as thieves those two.”

Crashing the Party

Shortly after Meghan and Harry relocated to Montecito, California, the former Hallmark actress sat down with Gloria Steinem to encourage voters to participate in the 2020 presidential election. During the socially distant conversation amid the coronavirus pandemic, Guy and Pula couldn’t help but steal the spotlight after running in front of the camera.

‘Emotional Support’ Pups

Harry spoke with WellChild Award honorees, a program designed to honor British families dealing with their children’s chronic illness, about his own brood in October 2022.

A Literary Shoutout

The duke’s first memoir, titled Spare, features a subtle tribute to Guy, Pula and Mia ahead of its January 2023 release. Harry’s author bio notes that he lives in Santa Barbara, California, “with his family and three dogs.”

A ‘Chaotic’ Morning Routine

The When Sparks Fly actress opened up about her family’s busy morning routine during a November 2022 episode of her “Archetypes” podcast.

“I’m sure it’ll only get more chaotic as they get older,” Meghan noted at the time. “But for me, it’s, you know, both monitors on for the kids to hear them, always up with Lili, get her downstairs, then a half hour later, Archie’s up. I start doing his lunchbox right before he’s up while I have her, getting her a little nibble. My husband’s helping me get him downstairs.”

After making sure both Archie and Lili are settled with breakfast, it’s the pups’ turn. “And then it's like feed all three of the dogs, because we just got another dog,” she recalled. “And then [we] get Archie out the door to school. It feels like a whirlwind.”

‘Running Around’ Tyler Perry’s House

The Madea: Homecoming star invited Harry and Meghan to stay at his Los Angeles home after their 2020 move. In the couple’s Harry & Meghan docuseries, they remembered what it was like at Perry’s abode for their family — and their pups.

“For the first six weeks that we were here, we were able to walk around like this. The two of us would be up here [on the grass], Archie, sort of walking along here [and] the dogs running around,” Harry remembered in the sixth episode of the Netflix production, which premiered in December 2022.

Falling in Love With Meghan’s Pups

In Harry’s January 2023 memoir, Spare, the duke recalled when Meghan and Guy moved into Nottingham Cottage. Ahead of the duo's international move, Guy ran away and injured his two front legs. As a result, the "beat-up" beagle needed casts.

“I often had to hold him upright so he could pee,” Harry wrote in the book. “I didn’t mind in the least. I loved that dog. I couldn’t stop kissing him, petting him. Yes, my intense feelings for Meg spilled over onto anyone or anything she loved.”
