Us rating: **

Despite earning $312 million, this sequel is a plot-deprived mess. Robert Downey Jr. returns as billionaire hero Tony Stark/Iron Man, though his blood has now turned increasingly toxic. And while he's joined by a new martial arts–trained assistant (Scarlett Johansson) and a wacky Russian rival (Mickey Rourke), the follow-up is mostly just expensive CGI battles that sustain the franchise until the inevitable threequel. (Paramount, $30)
