Review | Mother and Child

Us Rating: **

This slow ensemble drama connects three distraught women: a physical therapist (Annette Bening) still mourning the baby she gave up at 14; that daughter (Naomi Watts), now a lawyer with control issues; and an infertile baker (Kerry Washington) desperate to adopt. While the talented actresses do their best with the script, it forces them to behave in hysterical and overwrought ways. Bening's performance in particular is atypically fussy, with her hands rising up in front of her face when she gets excited. The result: modern gloss on an old-fashioned melodrama.
