In this tortured coming-of-age story set at an NYC prep school, gloomy wannabe artist George (Freddie Highmore) moons over stunner Sally (Emma Roberts). As the lead character, George comes off as more pathetic than sympathetic, barfing in the gutter after a wild night out, dissing his working mother (Rita Wilson) and smugly insulting his school principal (Blair Underwood). So the audience hardly cares whether limp George fails to graduate, finds his true self or gets the girl. And while Roberts glows, she deserves more than this flimsy, underwritten part. The humdrum romance flunks out.
