A wizard (Nicolas Cage, mocking his serious side) finds an apprentice in a geeky kid (Jay Baruchel). As the young scientist learns Magic 101 and woos a student (Teresa Palmer), he draws the wrath of the sorcerer's nemesis (Alfred Molina). With a few laughs -- and one crackling action scene in NYC's Chinatown -- the intermittently amusing fantasy doesn’t aim high but hits the mark for summer entertainment.
