Moody and packed with plot, Martin Scorsese's fourth pairing with Leonardo DiCaprio casts the actor as a U.S. marshal who is investigating a prison for the insane -- and dealing with his own demons surrounding the death of his wife (Michelle Williams). Though some sequences in the 1954-set thriller have more talk than action, the complex story, haunting score and cinematography that echos The Shining make for a mostly gripping journey. And leading man DiCaprio, who's in every scene, hold the intricate story together with ease. (Paramount, $30).
