Liz Abts

Liz Abts always has a camera by her side. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, she lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and grumpy cat. She is the photo director for all of American Media, Inc’s digital entertainment titles, which include Us Weekly, Life & Style, In Touch, and Radar Online, among others. When not on the lookout for baby bumps, missing wedding rings and odd celebrity pairings, she spends her time working on her own photography (which can be seen at https://lizmiller.photoshelter.com/) and running marathons.

Education

Liz obtained an English degree from Portland’s Lewis & Clark College in 2002. She later moved to New York to attend the International Center of Photography’s Documentary Photography & Photojournalism Program in 2005.

Work history

Sixteen months later, Liz started an internship at the New York Bureau of French photo agency Sipa Press, which quickly turned into a full time job as a photo editor. During her five years at the agency, she sold the first photo of Michelle Williams after Heath Ledger’s death, learned the importance of “knowing your worth” when negotiating image sales, pulled her first overnighter shooting and sourcing images of the celebrations in New York City when Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008, and had many sleepless nights covering award shows.

Liz then had a brief stint at the photo agency Photolibrary as a photo researcher (where she discovered she much preferred editorial images over stock photography) and was thrilled when she landed a job at Us Weekly as the assistant online photo editor in 2012. Over the past eight years, she has moved through roles as associate online photo editor, senior online photo editor, and head of photo until she was promoted to her current position. Some of her most notable photo galleries include Prince George’s Grumpiest Faces, Biggest Celebrity Cheating Scandals Ever! and Celebrities Who Got Tattoos for Love. (And she lives for a feudy split!) She also wakes up at the crack of dawn after every awards show to put together the most dynamic images from the afterparties and backstage at the event. One day she hopes to meet Taylor Swift.
