Born April 23, 1990, British actor Dev Patel had a quick rise to fame. He was born into a family of Indian descent, even though both of his parents grew up in Indian communities in Kenya.
Growing up, Patel was very involved in martial arts and even won a bronze medal at the Action International Martial Arts Association World Championship in 2004. But as destiny would have it, his mother took him to an audition for a TV show after seeing an ad in the paper. Patel was cast in the role of Anwar Kharral in the British teen drama Skins.
Director Danny Boyle saw Patel in the show and asked him to audition for the role of Jamal Malik in his new film Slumdog Millionaire. After being cast in the film, Patel won 10 awards for his portrayal of Malik.
In another twist, life imitated art and Patel fell for his Slumdog Millionaire costar Freida Pinto. The two have been together ever since.
