From Ben Affleck to Scott Foley and more, the actress takes her time in the romance department and really commits. After many years of dating in the public eye, the 13 Going on 30 star opened up about the struggles that come with finding love in the spotlight. “If it’s true and you are starting to be serious with someone and they start saying, ‘Well, when are they gonna be engaged?’ It’s almost like you just want to get there so that you can complete that and just maybe it will die down for a second,” she said during an October 2020 episode of the Tell Me More With Kelly Corrigan show. “And then it’s immediately, ‘Trouble in paradise.’ And it becomes almost a self-fulfilling prophecy.” The Golden Globe winner's first public beau was Scott Foley, who she met while guest starring on Felicity in 1998. The pair wed in 2000 and separated in March 2003. Garner opened up about the four-year marriage in an interview with Allure more than a decade later. “We didn’t have a shot,” she said in August 2013. “He’s a really good guy, and we just imploded.” The actress’ most high-profile romance, however, took place when she wed Ben Affleck in June 2005. The pair went public with their relationship in October 2004, less than one year after the Argo producer called off his engagement with Jennifer Lopez. After welcoming three children — Violet, Seraphina and Samuel — the couple announced their split one day after their 10th anniversary in June 2015. Although Garner referred to the actor as the “love of my life” in a February 2016 Vanity Fair interview, she filed for divorce in April 2017. A source revealed to Us Weekly in May 2020 that the couple had “worked hard to get to a good place” in the years since their breakup, especially amid Affleck’s struggles with his sobriety. The Yes Day actress is “always polite and trusts Ben and lets him do what he wants when he’s with the kids,” the insider added. Just after they finalized details of their divorce in October 2018, Us broke the news that Garner had a new man in her life: John Miller. At the time, a source revealed that the pair had been dating six months. The Scandal alum and the 13 Going on 30 actress met on the set of Felicity. Foley starred as Noel Crane from 1998 to 2002, while Garner had a guest spot on the series in 1998. The pair tied the knot in October 2000. However, they separated in March 2003, and their divorce was finalized in March of the following year.

“Oh, he’s a great guy,” she told Allure of her first ex-husband in August 2013. “We were full-on grown-ups, but looking back I’m aware we did not know what hit us. … We didn’t have a shot. He’s a really good guy, and we just imploded.”

The Whiskey Cavalier star went on to marry Marika Dominczyk in June 2007. The couple share daughter Malina and sons Keller and Konrad.

Michael Vartan

Onscreen to offscreen chemistry! Garner and Vartan played love interests Sydney Bristow and Michael Vaughn, respectively, on Alias from 2001 to 2006. The Peppermint actress’ rep confirmed to Us Weekly in August 2003 that the costars’ relationship turned romantic in real life. Though they split in 2004, the Monster-in-Law actor admitted to USA Today in May 2005, “Jennifer and I were best friends first, during [the romance] and after.”

The Arrangement alum shot down the idea of reconciling with his ex in March 2018. “If it didn’t work once, there’s a reason it didn’t work,” he told E!’s Daily Pop at the time.

However, there are clearly no hard feelings between the two. The Golden Globe winner wished her former boyfriend a happy birthday in November 2018, writing via Instagram: “Can you believe this baby face is 50?!”

Garner and Affleck worked together on 2001’s Pearl Harbor and 2003’s Daredevil before they went public with their relationship in October 2004. The Justice League actor proposed in April 2005, and the couple wed in June 2005. The Oscar winner and the Camping star welcomed daughter Violet in December 2005, daughter Seraphina in January 2009 and son Samuel in February 2012.

The pair announced their split in June 2015, just one day after their 10th anniversary. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to coparenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time,” they said in a joint statement to Us at the time.

“I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him. And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again. You can’t have these three babies and so much of what we had,” she told Vanity Fair in February 2016. “He’s the love of my life. What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

The exes remained close after the breakup and while the Gone Girl star completed multiple stints in rehab for alcohol abuse. The actress eventually filed for divorce in April 2017, but the marriage was not officially over until a judge signed off in November 2018.

Us broke the news in October 2018 that the Emmy nominee was dating the businessman after her divorce. “Jen brings out the best in John, and he is the happiest he has probably ever been,” a source told Us at the time. “It’s a loving, healthy relationship.”

Another insider added in January 2019: “No one would be surprised if they got engaged by summer. John has discussed marrying Jen.”

Though the pair split in August 2020, Us exclusively confirmed they decided to give their relationship another go in May 2021.
