Taking the long road. Everyone’s love story is a little different — and engaged celebrities are no exception. Some stars say “I do” within a year of knowing each other, others wait for years (and even decades) before making it official. Amy Adams and husband Darren Le Gallo for example, didn’t rush down the aisle after their 2008 proposal. It took seven years before the lovebirds tied the knot. “I’m not getting married anytime soon,” the American Hustle star told Vanity Fair in December 2013. She told Allure the same year that they “both have a very specific idea that we want to do this [ceremony] in spring or fall, like in those months, but every time I’m busy working.” After getting hitched in 2015, Adams revealed that she did feel a shift in the couple’s bond. “We always had the commitment but now he’s stuck with me and I can really act out,” the actress told The Times in January 2016. “I’m kidding. The truth is, I feel a stronger sense of family, a bigger sense of permanence, which is a nice thing for me.” Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis welcomed two children, son Otis and daughter Daisy, since announcing their engagement in 2013. During an April 2016 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Sudeikis joked about what was taking them so long to make it down the aisle. “I believe we won’t get married until weed is legal in every state,” the Horrible Bosses actor said. "I'll have a better understanding of why [the split happened] in a year," Sudeikis told GQ in July 2021. "And an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it'll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle." He added: "That's an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about. You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it." Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth chose to have a six-year engagement, dating on and off in between, before getting married in December 2018. The pair split less than a year later in August 2019. Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga chose to wait for their special day, but nine years after the actress showed off her diamond ring, the pair called off their engagement and ended their relationship. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

After seven years together, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith costars confirmed their engagement in April 2012 when Jolie was spotted wearing a gorgeous custom-designed ring on that finger. The couple, who share six kids — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne — tied the knot in 2014. They split in two years later.

Green and Fox tied the knot in June 2010 after two engagements. The lovebirds, who began dating in 2004, first got engaged in November 2006, only to eventually call it quits in February 2009. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum proposed to Fox for the second time in June 2010 and several weeks later, they were husband and wife. Green, who shares three sons with the Transformers actress, confirmed the pair’s split in May 2020.

The Good Place alum and Parenthood actor got engaged in 2009. They said “I do” in a courthouse ceremony four years later in 2013. "We got married in a tiny room in the Beverly Hills courthouse, and it was still one of the best days of my life," Bell told CBS News in July 2016. The couple shares two daughters.

Carmen Electra and Rob Patterson

They were engaged for four long years before Electra and Patterson decided to go their separate ways in 2012. The model went on to date Simon Cowell later that year, although the X Factor judge denied Electra was his girlfriend. "She's not my girlfriend," he told Ryan Seacrest. "We're people who date."

JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers

After meeting on The Bachelorette in 2016, the sweethearts have gotten engaged twice. The first proposal took place on the season 12 finale of the ABC series, while the second happened in August 2019. The pair planned on having their nuptials in June 2020, but had to postpone amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Even though I don’t get to marry you todayyyyy @jrodgers11, I know it will be all the more worth the wait,” Fletcher wrote via Instagram on what would’ve been their wedding date. “2021, we reallyyyyy can’t wait for you.”

The reality TV couple tied the knot in May 2022.

After a 5-year engagement and two kids together, the couple tied the knot in a surprise ceremony in August 2011. "We started talking about why to do it at this point in our relationship," Burke said of marriage in a 2010 blog post. "'Do you want forever?' David asked. 'Yes, I need forever,' I said. It was just that simple. I would like to have a husband." After 12 years of marriage, Us confirmed that Burke and Charvet had separated in April 2018.

LaLa Anthony (née Vazquez) and Carmelo Anthony

The NBA player Carmelo and his love were engaged for five years before they tied the knot in July 2010 in a New York City wedding. "It was the most amazing night of my life," LaLa told Us of her nuptials to the athlete, with whom she shares son Kiyan. The couple separated in April 2017 after seven years of marriage. Us confirmed in December 2018 that they were back together, and despite having a “strained” relationship as of June 2019, the family quarantined together in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

LaLa filed for divorce in July 2021.

Amy Adams told Vanity Fair in its January 2014 issue that she was in no rush to tie the knot to longtime love, Le Gallo — even after 11 years of dating and his April 2008 proposal. "I'm not getting married anytime soon," Adams said of her partner, with whom she shares daughter Aviana. "I know he's completely capable and lovely, and beautiful." The two eventually wed in May 2015.

Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde

The actors dated for two years before Sudeikis got down on one knee and asked the New York native to marry him in 2013. The couple, who have since welcomed two children, aren’t in a rush to walk down the aisle. "We are seriously connected," Wilde told The Edit in February 2016. "Before you have a child, marriage is the ultimate commitment and promise to one another, and then once you have a child, it's like, ‘Oh, we're committed and promised already.'"
