Everything We Know So Far About the Last Season of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: A 'Hell of a Final Chapter'

Tits up! The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is ready to go out with a bang — just as Midge's comedy career is getting back on track.

During the Amazon Studios series' first three seasons, Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) steadily saw her new stand-up career flourish as she landed a coveted gig opening up for musician Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain). However, a seemingly pointed joke about Shy’s romantic history at a hometown gig led to a major setback ahead of season 4.

Midge spent most of the fourth season — which premiered in early 2022 — licking her wounds as an emcee at an illegal strip club, refusing to get back on legitimate stages. After watching Lenny Bruce’s (Luke Kirby) impressive set at New York’s Carnegie Hall in the season finale, she seemed ready to get back where she knew she belonged.

Season 4 of the Emmy-winning series — which was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino — premiered on the streaming platform one day after it was renewed for a fifth and final season.

“Amy, Dan and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have blazed an unparalleled path, elevating the stories we tell about women, challenging the norms in our industry, and forever altering the entertainment landscape with their one-of-a-kind storytelling,” Amazon Studios head, Jennifer Salke, said in a February 2022 statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The dozens of awards cement Maisel’s legacy in many ways, but what’s even more enduring and poignant are the characters Amy created and the joyous, brilliant, singular world she and Dan brought to life.”

She continued: “This series has meant so much to Prime Video and the effects of its success will be felt long after its final season. I can’t wait for fans and our worldwide Prime Video audience to savor each moment as we embark on the culmination of this groundbreaking and unforgettable series.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — which debuted in November 2017 — follows Midge, a Jewish American housewife, and her family in 1960s New York City. Their seemingly perfect life is turned on its head when her husband, Joel Maisel (Michael Zegen), announces he’s leaving her for his secretary. While rambling about her new normal at a bar, Midge stumbles into a new career as a comedienne.

The show also stars Alex Borstein (Susie Myerson), Tony Shalhoub (Abe Weissman), Marin Hinkle (Rose Weissman), Kevin Pollak (Moise Maisel), Caroline Aaron (Shirley Maisel) and Jane Lynch (Sophie Lennon). While the story is mostly fictional, Kirby’s character is the only role to be inspired by a real person.

“We felt a bit of a kind of duty to sort of start touching on the aspects of Lenny Bruce’s life that kind of led up to his dying young,” the Take the Waltz actor exclusively told Us Weekly in February 2022. “We’re sort of bringing Lenny Bruce a little bit down to Earth this season and kind of exploring that a little bit.”

Kirby added: “I don’t know how Midge will feel [when Lenny eventually dies in 1966]. Hopefully, she’ll be really broken up about it and then hopefully she will do the healthy thing and move on and make herself happy.”

Is It Renewed?

The streaming platform renewed the series for one last hoorah in February 2022, one day before season 4 debuted.

Has Filming Begun?

“A few days ago we started shooting Season 5 (!) of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It’s bittersweet,” Brosnahan captioned a February 2022 Instagram snap of a new script. “The band is back together again and we can’t wait to share season 4 with you starting tomorrow … it’s also going to be our last rodeo. Rest assured our tits are up and it’s going to be a hell of a final chapter. Stay tuned ✨.”

Who Is Coming Back?

Deadline confirmed in April 2022 that Gilmore Girls alum Kelly Bishop would reprise her season 4 cameo as matchmaker Benedetta. Alfie Fuller (Susie’s assistant Dinah) and Jason Ralph (Brosnahan’s husband, who played TV booker Mike Carr) were also upped to series regulars. Season 4 breakouts Gideon Glick and Reid Scott have been spotted filming new scenes in NYC.

Will Midge and Lenny’s Relationship Grow?

“Luke and I just love working together so much. We've had scene after scene together that's just dreamy. So, more to come,” the I’m Your Woman actress teased during an April 2022 interview with Collider. “We trust completely that we are in the same fantastic hands and capable hands that we always have been, in Amy and Dan. They know when their story should come to a close and how to bring us home. And so, we're just excited to keep receiving the final scripts. … It's definitely bittersweet, but it's mostly sweet.”

Is There a Premiere Date?

A release date for the final episodes has yet to be announced.

Will Milo Ventimiglia Return After Season 4 Cameo?

“We will see a nice, more extensive Part 2 to ‘Milo and Rachel,'” Daniel Palladino told TVLine in May 2022, referring to the Gilmore Girls alum's brief season 4 role as a handsome man that Midge flirts with in Central Park. “Yes, we’ll find out his name.”

“As with the rest of the show, it’s more about the journey and how we get there," Brosnahan told Extra in June 2022. "We’re definitely going to watch Midge’s star rise.”

Brosnahan and the Heroes alum were spotting filming together on June 30, 2022, in NYC. While the show’s leading lady wore a red jacket, skirt and beret, Ventimiglia looked dapper in a gray suit.

Is Rachel Brosnahan Excited?

“Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino keep raising the bar for us season after season,” the Wisconsin native gushed about the series creators at the 74th Emmy Awards in September 2022. “And they’ve given us so much do to, and so much to play with. So it’s been as much of a roller-coaster as ever and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

When asked about what viewers can expect from the final season, Brosnahan couldn’t give details but promised plenty of drama. “We’re two [episodes away]. We just saw the second to last and it’s getting really juicy,” she teased, adding that even she doesn’t know how the show will end.

She added: “I have no idea where we’re headed and I’m terrified and excited and I know it’s going to be exciting.”

When Did Filming Conclude?

“That’s a series wrap on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel,” Brosnahan captioned a November 2022 Instagram post. “This thing was lightning in a bottle. A cast, a crew and creators who got to time travel for 5 years together. It changed my life. I’m eternally grateful. I’ll have more words later, but for now … Thank you and goodnight.”

When Will ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 5 Premiere?

The final season will premiere on April 14 with the first three episodes. The rest of the season will be released air weekly until the finale.

Is There a Trailer?

Prime Video released the trailer for the comedy series' final season in March 2023. The clip shows off Midge going after her dreams as she signs autographs and briefly appears in a writers room. However, her family hints they have had a run in with some bad luck as the video pans to a building that caught on fire.

Guest Stars Revealed

In April 2023, Entertainment Weekly announced that Darren Criss, Sutton Foster, Hank Azaria, Danny Strong and Sean Gunn will all make guest appearances in the final season.
