About

Alberta, Canada native Chad Kroeger first found music fame as the lead singer and guitarist of Nickelback. Sent to juvenile detention for breaking into his junior high school, Kroeger — a self-taught guitarist — toured in a cover band upon his release and graduation from high school. In that cover band were Chad’s older half-brother Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake, with whom he’d eventually start Nickelback.

Chad and his band mates (including drummer Brandon, the Kroegers’ cousin, who was replaced by Ryan Vikedal) first released 1996’s Curb on their own label. Four years later, they followed up with The State, which featured the singles “Breathe” and “Leader of Men.” 2001 saw the success of their smash single “How You Remind Me,” off the album Silver Side Up. The group — rotating a handful of drummers in and out of the group — released five additional albums.

Chad Kroeger married Avril Lavigne in July 2013, nearly a decade after first meeting at a Vancouver nightclub while Lavigne was still married to ex-husband Deryck Whibley. (Lavigne filed for divorce from Sum 41’s Whibley in 2009 after three years of marriage.) Chad and his wife co-wrote the romantic ballad “Let Me Go,” off Lavigne’s fifth album.
