About

Cheryl Burke grew up in a family full of dancers, and began practicing ballet at age 4. After taking a few ballroom lessons, Burke was hooked.

She quickly shifted her focus, beginning to compete in ballroom dancing at the age of 13. Burke has seen much success throughout her career; nearly a decade later, in 2006, she was nominated for two Emmy awards for Outstanding Choreography and featured on the hit ABC show Dancing with the Stars. Burke also earned two consecutive Mirrorball trophies on DWTS during seasons two and three.

In April 2008, Burke opened her own dance studio in San Francisco while still competing on DWTS. After her season 2 introduction, Burke competed on every cycle of the ABC reality show until season 19. She returned for season 23 and 25 as well as season 27 through 30.

The reality star began dating actor Matthew Lawrence in February 2007 after meeting him on set during season 3, where his brother Joey Lawrence was competing. They broke up a year later. Ten years after first getting together, Burke and Lawrence reconciled in 2017 and got engaged a year later. That same year, in 2018, the dancer revealed that she had been dealing with substance abuse and was on a recovering alcoholic.

The couple got engaged in May 2019, and in September 2021, Burke celebrated three years of sobriety.

That same month, Burke was also diagnosed with COVID-19 and was forced to miss several episodes of the 30th season of DWTS.

Burke and Lawrence separated in January 2022, and Burke filed for divorce a month later.
