Us Rating: **

While Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon offer bracing performances in this historical sports drama -- and both got Oscar nods -- the film as a whole disappoints. Freeman plays Nelson Mandela, who works with a rugby team captain (Damon) to unify a racially torn South Africa during the competition for the 1995 World Cup. It's a worthy story, but the plot shoots in multiple directions and the script hammers home its themes like it's teaching the ABC's to kids. (Warner Home Video, $29)
