Celebrity Drug Confessions: Seth Rogen, Jada Pinkett Smith and More Stars Share Their Stories

Stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Tina Fey and Taylor Swift, have talked openly about drugs — both abstinence and addiction. "I don't drink to get drunk because that's just not cute,” Swift said during a 60 Minutes interview in November 2011. "I just don’t feel like [smoking weed], and I don't want to smoke anything because I sing." Four years later, the “Lover” singer told Barbra Walters that she waited until she turned 21 to start drinking at all, noting, “I do drink, I am 25.” She revealed during her “Most Fascinating People” interview in December 2014 that her public persona played a part in her choice. “I was so paranoid about getting in trouble or setting the wrong example or sending the wrong message,” Swift explained. While the Grammy winner isn’t a big drinker or avid smoker, Seth Rogen has been vocal for decades about his love of weed. “It’s just a tool we use to make our experience more palatable, and some people need those tools a lot more than others. For me, it’s like shoes. For you, it might be like sunglasses. Not everyone’s the same,” he told New York Times Magazine in April 2021 about his reason for consistently being high. “If someone doesn’t need to smoke weed? Great. It’s the same as someone telling me they don’t wear glasses. ‘Mazel tov! You don’t wear glasses. I do!’” [jwplayer k7u0DJWV-l3ahXupL] Jada Pinkett Smith, on the other hand, recalled being addicted to drugs and alcohol early on in her career, explaining in July 2021 how she was over to overcome her problem. "Drinking red wine for me was like drinking glasses of water," the actress said during an episode of Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk. "Because I'm used to that hard hit. I was drinking hard in high school, too, and when I got out here [to L.A.] I was doing cocktails. So, ecstasy, alcohol, weed. Let me tell you, I was having myself a little ball." She continued: “I would do those three together, that was my cocktail. Your threshold becomes so high, that what it takes for you to get to the place you need to get to, it'll take me two bottles to get to.” Luckily for the Girls’ Trip star, she was able to eventually see she had a problem in the ‘90s and once she realized she was “going for that third bottle of wine,” which she usually mixed with drugs she recalled going “cold turkey that day.” Read more celebrities’ shocking drug confessions below: [podcast_block]

Billy Crystal

The When Harry Met Sally star detailed a recent drug-filled doctor's visit during an August 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After explaining that he stopped at a cannabis shop and took four edible gummies ahead of his MRI appointment — he was experiencing hip pain and was worried about being claustrophobic during the exam — Crystal noted that things got weird quick.

“I have headsets on. They give you this thing to squeeze in case you get into trouble. About a half-hour in, I got really hungry. So, I squeeze the thing and he goes, ‘Are you OK, Mr. Crystal?’ And I go, ‘Is there a Taco Bell nearby?’” the actor recalled. “40 minutes in, I squeeze it again and [say], ‘I’m thinking Postmates may deliver. I'm thinking gumbo or Nutella French toast. Something like that.’”

Mena Suvari

In July 2021, the actress released The Great Peace, a memoir about her struggles through the years. In the book, she detailed her battle with drug addiction after being raped. “I took drugs to numb myself from the pain," the American Beauty star wrote. "Alcohol. Pot. Coke. Crystal meth. Acid. Ecstasy. Mushrooms. Mescaline. It was my way of detaching from the hell of my existence — and surviving.”

Jada Pinkett Smith

The Gotham alum called herself a “walking miracle” while detailing her past addiction issues during a July 2021 episode of Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk. “Drinking red wine for me was like drinking glasses of water," she revealed. "Because I'm used to that hard hit. I was drinking hard in high school, too. When I got out here [to L.A.] I was doing cocktails. So, ecstasy, alcohol, weed. Let me tell you, I was having myself a little ball." 

Pinkett Smith recalled “doing things that I thought were addictive,” noting her go-to “cocktail” was combining ecstasy, alcohol and weed. “Your threshold becomes so high, that what it takes for you to get to the place you need to get to, it'll take me two bottles to get to,” she said, that she thought doing “ecstasy, weed and alcohol at the same time [would make her] get there faster and keep the high going." 

After pointing out that addiction runs in her family — the actress’ mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, struggled with heroin — Pinkett Smith explained it was actually easy to get clean once she admitted there was an issue. "Once I was going for that third bottle of wine, I said, 'You've got a problem,' and it was cold turkey that day," she recalled, adding that she passed out filming 1996’s The Nutty Professor from drug use, which was eye-opening. "That day I just stopped."

Noah Centineo

In a February 2020 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Perfect Date actor candidly addressed his past with drugs. Centineo noted that he and his pals would “take Molly and talk for five hours and, like, get to the bottom of some really deeply philosophical existential questions.” But he also was open during “everything,” adding: “There wasn’t really much I wouldn’t do. I never, ever injected anything, which is good. I smoked a lot of things. I was really upset, man. It was a really dark time in my life.”

Stassi Schroeder

The Vanderpump Rules star admitted to mixing alcohol with Adderall — and blamed the prescription drug, which is used to treat ADHD, for her meltdowns on the show.

“I want to figure out what it is that’s making me like this. And I hurt my friends, I hurt him, I hurt myself,” she said on part 3 of the season 7 reunion, which aired in May 2019. “And that was a moment where I was like — and I didn’t want to, like, full-on come out and say this, but I’m not gonna take Adderall again. Like, I’m not gonna do that.”

The Jackass alum confessed that he once snorted cocaine that had been spattered with the blood of his HIV-positive drug dealer in an interview for In Depth With Graham Bensinger on January 16, 2019. “This is how desperate and pathetic my addiction was," he said. "I sat there, like, knowingly scraping up this tainted, like, blood cocaine and uh, I sat there and snorted it, which is so f–ked up — I snorted the blood of an intravenous drug user.”

Kim Kardashian

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star revealed during a November 25, 2018 episode of the show that she took ecstasy prior to marrying ex-husband Damon Thomas and also before filming her infamous sex tape with ex Ray J. “I got married on ecstasy ... the first time,” she told sister Kendall Jenner. When Kourtney Kardashian's ex Scott Disick inquired whether she'd taken drugs ahead of her home movie, she replied, “Absolutely. Everyone knows it. My jaw was shaking ... I definitely went through a wild phase.”

Seth Rogen

After starring in numerous weed-related films like 2008's Pineapple Express and 2013's This Is the End, it's no secret that Rogen likes to light up. "I think people still live with the propaganda version of it where they think it's gonna make you go crazy or you can never be productive when you use it," Rogen told ITN News in December 2014. "I'm from Vancouver where it's just much more culturally accepted. And after getting detained by the police a few times, I realized how seriously it's viewed."

Amy Poehler

The Parks and Recreation star opened up about her past cocaine and ecstasy use in her memoir Yes Please in October 2014. "I tried cocaine, which I instantly loved but eventually hated," she recalled. "Cocaine is terrific if you want to hang out with people you don't know very well and play ping-pong all night [but] it's bad for almost everything else…the day after cocaine is rough." She also noted that having sons Archie and Abel with ex-husband Will Arnett made her pull back on recreational drugs too. "I can't perform, drive or write stoned, and therefore I smoke pot a lot less than I used to," she wrote.

Shailene Woodley

What's the number one thing The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen and Divergent's Tris Prior will never do? Drugs! "I sent her an email," Woodley told E! News of Lawrence in March 2014. "And she basically said 'If you love the story and you love the character, don't pay attention to the budget and jump in. Don't do anything stupid. Don't do drugs and don't make a sex tape and you'll be fine.'"

Leonardo DiCaprio

He might be the Wolf of Wall Street, who happily snorted cocaine out of a hooker's unmentionables, but the actor won't touch drugs. He told the Los Angeles Times in February 2014 that it's a product of growing up poor. "Never done it," DiCaprio said about drugs. "That's because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was 3 or 4 years old. So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me."

Lena Dunham

Similar to her Girls persona, Dunham doesn't have a good track record with drugs. In a January 2014 interview with The Guardian, she admitted, "I tried coke, but was a total failure. I snorted a little bit, then always sneezed. It was sadder than having not tried drugs, in that I tried drugs and failed at trying drugs."

Demi Lovato

Former Disney star Lovato, who was hospitalized after a drug overdose in July 2018, spoke about their addictions as far back as December 2013. "I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes," Lovato told Access Hollywood.  "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there."

Jay-Z

Blue Ivy's famous Daddy has rapped about his beginnings as a crack dealer in Brooklyn, N.Y., but HOVA has never done the drug himself. In the October 2013 cover story of Vanity Fair, Beyoncé's hubby talked about the mentality surrounding his dealing. "Not until later, when I realized the effects on the community," he admitted when asked whether he felt guilty for aiding addicts. "I started looking at the community on the whole, but in the beginning, I was thinking about buying clothes."

Lauren Conrad

Though her ex-boyfriend Jason Wahler went to rehab for alcoholism and substance abuse, the Laguna Beach and Hills star doesn't tolerate drugs. In an in-depth interview for NaturalHigh.TV in October 2013, Conrad opened up about her thoughts on substance abuse.  

"Once I got to L.A. that's where I saw drug use at a whole new level," Conrad revealed. "It's sad that people come and they have this bright future and they're so talented. It's the same story, and people don't really learn from it."

Miley Cyrus

The former Disney star's new wild image is backed up with her frequent drug references in her music and in the public eye. At the 2013 EMA awards, she lit a joint on stage while accepting an award.  

"I think alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana," she said in Rolling Stone in September 2013. "I've seen a lot of people spiral down with alcohol, but I've never seen that happen with weed. As long as it isn't illegal, there are far more dangerous things."

Lindsay Lohan

Former child star Lohan is no stranger to rehab facilities. She spoke about her alcohol use in August 2013. "That in the past was a gateway for me," she said of booze. "I tried cocaine with alcohol. It never felt good the next day. [I did it] because it allowed me to drink more. I snorted it. I've never injected anything."

Taylor Swift

She may be addicted to relationships, but Swift doesn't seem to be tempted by substance abuse. At the age of 22, Swift opened up in a 60 Minutes interview about her take on drinking and smoking pot. "I have drunk, but I'm not a drinker. I don't drink to get drunk because that's not cute," she dished. "And I don't want to smoke anything because I sing!"

Adam Levine

Those moves like Jagger are au naturel! The Voice coach and Maroon 5 frontman swore off drugs after a bad experience early in his career. “We had a brief experience one time with what I guess was Ambien," Levine told MSN in May 2013. "It was the first and last time we took this drug. But we were at Denny’s at some shady part of the city of whatever part of the country we were in, and we took it and we ordered the food and we woke up at the table, what must have been an hour later.”

George Clooney

Clooney's too cool for coke! Though he admitted to trying the drug, the Monuments Men star isn't interested in becoming an addict. "I didn't have an issue with it," he told the Hollywood Reporter in February 2012. "I'm not a big druggie, not at all. Blow is absolutely a nonstarter."

Angelina Jolie

These days she's known for her humanitarian work and career as a seasoned actress, but few can forget her crazy vile-of-blood-around-her-neck days. Jolie has admitted to past drug use and in a November 2011 interview with 60 Minutes she reflected on that time in her life. "I went through heavy, darker times and I survived them," she said. "I didn't die young, so I'm very lucky. People can imagine that I did the most dangerous and I did the worst and for many reasons I shouldn't be here."

Leighton Meester

The now-married Gossip Girl star has admittedly reformed since her party girl days. In the January 2011 issue of Allure, she talked about her wild past. "We had craaaazy parties, we had DJ's, bands, an ice luge, a fire twirler," she said. "I mean, drinking is one thing – overdrinking is another. And drugs are something that I do not tolerate at all. You'd be surprised how many people do it. If you go out and you're living the nightlife scene, that's what people do."

Drew Barrymore

Now that she's a mother, Barrymore has cleaned up her act, but her wild child origins had her abusing drugs by age 11. She tried cocaine at age 12 and was in rehab by age 14. "[I started smoking] when I was nine," she said on 60 Minutes in October 2009 of her family. "I know it's nuts. It was an extraordinary experience. I went through it, and I learned a lot. And I learned it in front of everyone which was righteously embarrassing. But you know what, it made me stronger."

Michael Phelps

He set records as an Olympian, but Phelps' personal life has a less-than-stellar track record. In 2009, he was photographed smoking a bong. He later released a statement saying, “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said. “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry."

James Franco

He may have starred in pot-infused films like 2008's Pineapple Express, but Franco's performance is just quality acting. "I used to smoke weed, but I haven't done it in a long time," Franco told USA Today in August 2008. "Everybody, even now, thinks, 'That guy is stoned.' It's just the way I talk, because I don't smoke weed. Somehow, there's something about me, the way I talk, that implies that I'm on drugs."

Tina Fey

The SNL alum is the life of the party, but she doesn't need drugs to help her get that way. The 43-year-old mother of two talked to Women's Health magazine in January 2007 about abstaining from drugs. "I have had surgeries before when I've been unconscious, but I have never used any kind of recreational drug," she revealed. "I want to be on record saying this, so my daughter can see it one day in the future. I have never done any drugs! I am extremely square and obedient in nature!"
