Friendly Exes! Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' Amicable Post-Split Relationship Through the Years

Keeping it cordial! Demi Moore and Bruce Willis have managed to stay close after ending their marriage in 2000 — and their friendly relationship is the definition of coparenting goals. The Die Hard star and Moore tied the knot in 1987 after meeting at the premiere for the buddy cop film Stakeout, which starred Moore's then-fiancé Emilio Estevez. The Ghost star was previously married to singer Freddy Moore from 1981 to 1985. After their wedding, Willis and Demi welcomed three daughters: Rumer in 1988, Scout in 1991, and Tallulah in 1994. The former couple announced their separation in June 1998 and filed for divorce two years later. When they submitted their paperwork in October 2000, their divorce was finalized the same day. We're very close," the Unbreakable actor explained to Rolling Stone. "We have three children whom we will continue to raise together, and we’re probably as close now as we ever were. It’s difficult to live your life and marriage under a magnifying glass, which is what happens to movie star couples." While the exes may have experienced their ups and downs during their romantic relationship, their children were impressed with the way they've been able to stay a tight-knit family after the split. "I’m so thankful and grateful that my parents made such an effort at that time," Rumer revealed to Larry King in March 2015 after both her parents had remarried. Bruce exchanged vows with model Emma Heming in March 2009 and Demi was married to Ashton Kutcher from 2005 to 2013. "They always made an effort to do all of the family events still together and made such an effort to still have our family be as one unit, as opposed to two separate things, which I think really made an impact." Bruce and Demi raised eyebrows in April 2020 when fans discovered that they were quarantined with each other and their daughters amid the global coronavirus outbreak. Tallulah shared a photo of the family posed in matching green pajamas and revealed that they had been staying together "for 27 days taking every precaution" to stay safe and healthy during the crisis. No Hard Feelings

The Sixth Sense star admitted shortly after his divorce from Demi that he still had plenty of love for her in his heart. "We have three children whom we will continue to raise together, and we’re probably as close now as we ever were. We realize we have a lifelong commitment to our kids. Our friendship continues," he told Rolling Stone.

A Blended 'Tribe'

After both he and his ex-wife had moved onto new loves, Bruce claimed that the two couples had become a close "tribe." Bruce and his wife explained to W magazine in 2009 that they had a "comfortable and fun" relationship with Demi and Kutcher. "It's generated a lot of interest because everyone can understand resentment and envy in the breakup of a marriage, but they don't understand how I can get along with my ex like that," Bruce said at at the time. "Demi and I made a choice to put the kids first, and we're really lucky that it turns out we all have fun together."

Showing Their Support

Fifteen years after their split, the exes reunited to cheer on their daughter Rumer as she competed on season 20 of Dancing With the Stars. "I wanted people here tonight who love and support me unconditionally and I really felt that," Rumer said of her parents in the audience. "I couldn’t have asked for anything else."

Coparenting Goals

Bruce and Demi did everything in their power to give their daughters a positive and nurturing childhood and the hard work they did to keep the family strong was not lost on Rumer. "They always made an effort to do all of the family events still together and made such an effort to still have our family be as one unit, as opposed to two separate things, which I think really made an impact," she told Larry King in March 2015.

Roasted!

Demi stole the show when she emerged as a surprise guest at her ex's Comedy Central roast in July 2018. "She was hilarious, light-hearted, and having a lot of fun on stage,” S. Mitchell Marketing exec Stefanie Mitchell told Us Weekly at the time. “She ended it with a warm tribute to Bruce, remarking that they were family and how proud she was of him. It was heartwarming ... Bruce was cracking up the entire time and smiled at her with warmness."

One Big Happy Family

When the Twelve Monkeys star renewed his vows with Heming to celebrate their 10th anniversary in March 2019, the couple "wouldn't do it without" Demi there. "She welcomed me into her family like I welcomed her into ours," Heming told Us. "I have so much respect for how Bruce and Demi worked through their divorce to be able to put their children first. I learned so much from that and grew so much from watching that. It was important for her to be there."

Family Affair

Bruce and his daughters came together to celebrate the launch of Demi's revealing memoir, Inside Out, in September 2019. Though the book contained some heart-wrenching details about their marriage, Bruce was proud to support his ex's endeavor.

In her emotional memoir, the G.I. Jane actress admitted that she was "very proud" of her divorce from Bruce. "It wasn’t easy at first, but we managed to move the heart of our relationship, the heart of what created our family, into something new that gave the girls a loving, supportive environment with both parents," she wrote. "We felt more connected than we did before the divorce."

The Indecent Proposal star shared a loving tribute to her ex on his 65th birthday in March 2020. "Happy birthday Bruce! Thank you for the three greatest gifts of my life ❤️," Demi captioned an adorable throwback picture of their family.

The exes turned heads when it was confirmed that they had been quarantined together for four weeks amid the global coronavirus crisis. Tallulah posted a sweet snapshot of her sisters and her parents in matching PJs in April 2020 and reassured fans that they were "taking every precaution" to stay healthy.

Supporting Him

In March 2022, Moore, Heming and their respective daughters released a letter announcing Willis' retirement. The Die Hard actor is struggling with aphasia, which affects cognitive abilities.

"This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support," the statement read, in part. "We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, 'Live it up' and together we plan to do just that."
