Think about that magical, unsteady, blinding sensation of falling in love for the first time. Amazingly, those emotions are illuminated to perfection in this affecting gem. The courtship unfolds in select passages: One minute, shy British exchange student Anna (Felicity Jones) and her college classmate Jacob (Anton Yelchin) reveal a mutual love for Paul Simon music on a first date in L.A.; the next, they're planning a summer together. But their blissful romance hits a roadblock when Anna violates her visa and can’t return to the States. The couple try to stay together via visits in London -- even as they detach and move on. (Jennifer Lawrence has a nice turn as Jacob's earthy new girl.)
The bittersweet drama is so raw and intimate, watching the appealing Jones and Yelchin giggle in his bedroom and bicker in her kitchen feels like an invasion of privacy. In fact, the actors -- check that, surefire breakout stars -- exude an astounding natural bond, making their ups and downs all the more heart-tugging and real. Don't let this one slip away.
