Madonna

Madonna Bio Bio

What can one say about Madonna that hasn’t already been said? The immortal icon of modern music, a face-changing prototype for every appearance-manipulating pop star since, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone came from Michigan and, adopting the single-word name of Jesus’ mother, has dominated the music landscape for over twenty years.

Madonna in Love Love
Madonna’s calico quilt of love affairs has been almost as diverse as her multiple personality transformations. Married to actor Sean Penn in the ‘80s, Madonna also had significant relationships with Warren Beatty, Dennis Rodman, and personal trainer Carlos Leon, with whom she had her daughter Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon. In 2000 she married Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director Guy Ritchie. Shortly afterward she had her second child, Rocco Ritchie. Currently, she's jumped on the Africa bandwagon, and is working on developing a charity for impoverished African children. In October 2006, the singer adopted little tyke David Banda from Malawi. Madge says she followed all the necessary requirements to do so, but human rights advocacy groups still argued that she and Guy used her celebrity status to fast track the adoption process.
Madonna's Career Career

With more #1 hit singles than any other female artist in history, Madonna embodies modern pop-music success. Originally trained in dance at the University of Michigan, Madonna studied with Martha Graham and Pearl Lang in New York in the late ‘70s before being discovered for her music by record producer Mark Kamins. Her 1984 album Like A Virgin was the first of her super-successful controversial hits, and her innovative music videos pioneered the art form. Her wedding gown/garter belt look was the first of a series of chameleon-like changes she underwent seemingly with every album. In 1985, she gave movie acting a try with Desperately Seeking Susan, which was a success — although later roles in films like Shanghai Surprise and Evita were largely failures. Often damned by the Catholic church for her blasphemous imagery, Madonna also gained infamy for her 1992 photo-book "Sex," which featured her in a series of bondage and fetish scenarios. As a mother in her 40s, Madonna re-invented herself as an electronica goddess with her album Ray of Light, successfully bridging the gap to middle age.
