Balloon Boy's Dad Getting "Ticked Off" at Hoax Accusations

Friday – October 16, 2009 – 9:00am

Richard Heene -- whose 6-year-old-son Falcon was feared to have floated away on a "homemade flying saucer" Thursday in Colorado -- did the morning talk show circuit Friday, denying that the incident was a publicity stunt.

Appearing on Friday's Today show, Heene declared it was "absolutely not" a hoax.

"Now I am starting to get a little ticked off because I am repetitively getting asked this in the last couple of interviews," he told NBC's Meredith Vieira. "What do I have to gain about this? I am not selling anything. I am not advertising anything."

On ABC's Good Morning America, Heene (with his arm wrapped around son Falcon) added that it's "extremely pathetic" of people to imply his family did this for attention.

"We were holding on to every second, every second, just hoping he might come out OK," added Heene, who appeared with wife Mayumi on an October 2008 episode of ABC's Wife Swap.

His son, Falcon, told CNN Thursday that it was done "for a show." But on CBS' The Early Show, his father Heene said his son was referring to a camera crew that had asked Falcon to reenact him climbing into the attic.

"After the initial interview in the front yard with all the cameras, I had walked in the house thinking everybody was behind me, went up to the garage and I noticed Falcon was climbing up into the joists in the garage. And then I guess Bradford [Falcon's brother] was right there with him. But then I looked to the right and there's like 30 camera guys there and, anyway, one of the guys had asked if they could show him how he got up into the attic. And it was for a TV show. So that's what he was talking about."

Falcon admitted that that was what he was referring to, and also admitted that he had told his brother that he was going to "sneak inside" the balloon, but then he got out, causing people to believe he was inside when the balloon went aloft from the family's backyard Thursday morning

"And where did you go?" asked Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez.

"To the attic to play," Falcon told her.

Before the interview ended, Falcon's father thanked all those who helped in the search.

"Everyone who helped out, Sheriff's Department, National Guard, the news, everybody, they were just incredible," Heene said. "I just can't believe that that many people poured their hearts out and helped."

He wasted a lot of serious resources and police time just for media attention. I don't think the kid made up what his dad told him to say. This guy is seriously sick to need media attention that badly.

""this guy is the next kate gosselin!"" ---- I love this!! So funny!! This guy is CRAZY HUNGRY FOR MEDIA ATTENTION, have you all seen the Wifeswap video on youtube. His kids curse and don't respect their elders, he has anger issues. I hope they pay up for all the drama they caused.

Can we please be done with Jon & Kate. They make me sick. If everyone would just stop giving them the attention they thrive on they may just go away. For the sake of their children lets stop encouraging their bad behavior.

The fact that this family was on a reality show only tells me that they crave attention from the world. This is a publiciity stunt that went terrible wrong. The majority of the world knew that this was a "hoax" from the start. We CAN'T be fooled by the obvious.

Obviously this was publicity for that ridiculous balloon. Doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

America is ticked off at you Mr. Heene! This is absolutely for attention. Glad your son is fine - what you gain from this is the media attention, plus you are hoping some venture capitalist or other people interested in this scientific space stuff would notice and contact you. You should pay back the national guards, sheriffs that spent hours following your helium balloon. It is pathetic that you caused this problem; bad parenting is the biggest issue.

If it wasn't a hoax, prove it by bailing on the talk show circuit, and move on with your life of tabloid-friendly stunts. I think it's safe to say Falcon Heene spilled the beans on camera with his "show" statement. Richard Heene is a liar, and a fraud. He's also a dangerous parent. Richard is a liar, and he's trying to turn his entire family into liars just like him. I think child services needs to get involved here. He's endangering lives and minds of children with his games.

The only reason he is getting pissed is cuz its TRUE. IT was all a hoax. This dude is a total wack job and he USED his 5 year old to get in the papers. HE should have his kids taken away from him.

its a shame that people have to go to this extreme to get attention. love the fake cry on the today show. they should get fined...

Sounds a little too fishy, the parents should be billed for the cost for the workers that were looking for his son, when there could have been actual emergent people they could have helped. waste of money and time...
  • October 16, 2009 - 10:48am Ms. Right Says:

Even before people started questioning if this was a hoax, I thought this is not a good look for the family. The silver balloon used as an alternative to driving to work is not going to gain any future customers. If anything the FAA might want to monitor it if it were to gain control of direction. They looked like negligent parents at best (even though kids do hide out - especially to evade punishment.) At worst, they look abusive since the child said he did it to avoid punishment. If they wanted a pilot based on their weather chasing ways, looking like they endanger the welfare of a minor is not the way to do it. The best thing this family could do now is to lie low. No more interviews with all the kids. No more interviews without a lawyer. Really there should be no more interviews discussing this incident. LIE LOW!

Totally agree with 9:28, but people were bashing this family before he was even found. So sad when so many are so full of such hate.
  • October 16, 2009 - 10:43am Anonymous Says:

Wow hope they make them pay back all the money that was used (wasted) to find this boy.

The news was all about this STUPID balloon story -- not any REAL NEWS ON.
  • October 16, 2009 - 9:37am Anonymous Says:

He and his wife are freaky. I saw them on tv, and don't believe them. They probably can't prove it was a hoax, but I think it was.
