She shot to stardom in 1972 for her controversial role in Last Tango in Paris, and now French actress Maria Schneider has died at 58.
Schneider, who remained a fixture in French cinema, had been battling cancer, according to reports.
The daughter of a bookshop owner and French actor Daniel Gelin, Schneider was just 19 when she was cast in Tango opposite Marlon Brando, who was 48 at the time. The film came under fire for its charged sexual content and full frontal nude scenes.
Schneider, who came out as bisexual in 1974, also starred alongside Jack Nicholson in the 1975 flick The Passenger and with William Hurt and Anna Paquin in a 1996 remake of Jane Eyre.
