On-Again, Off-Again Celebrity Couples

Hot and cold! Some celebrity couples couldn't help splitting — and later rekindling — multiples times in their relationships. Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) dated off and on from 2015 to 2016 before they reconciled in June 2018 — just three months after the "Intentions" singer called it quits with Selena Gomez. Justin and the model tied the knot at a New York City courthouse in September 2018. One year later, they wed for a second time at a larger ceremony in South Carolina. During their split, Hailey felt that her relationship with Justin would last for the long haul if they ever got back together. “I think I always knew if we did ever work things out and get back together, it was going to be a situation where it was very serious and we were gonna get married or [it] was going to lead to that,” the Drop the Mic host said on the Hillsong Channel in May 2020. “I didn’t necessarily know what the timeline was gonna be. I just trusted and I think [it] was such a huge leap of faith … and I just trusted the people I knew [who] had watched me go through the whole journey with him, without him and then back together with him.” Hailey added that she always “hoped that he was a person I was gonna end up with,” adding, “So when we got together [again], it was just, like, ‘OK, I trust that this is supposed to be happening.’” Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green, for their part, tied the knot in 2010. The pair welcomed two sons, Noah and Bodhi, before the Transformers actress filed for divorce from Green in 2015. Fox later called off the divorce and the couple welcomed their youngest son, Journey, in 2016. Green announced their separation in May 2020 after nearly 10 years of marriage. "I will always love her,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum said on his “…With Brian Austin Green” podcast at the time. “And I know she will always love me and I know as far as a family what we have built is really cool and really special.” He added, "It sucks when life changes and something that you’re used to, that you’ve been doing for 15 years, you try and not get rid of but you change. Elon Musk and Grimes

The pair were first linked in 2018. Following many ups and downs, Grimes announced that she was expecting her first child in January 2020 and welcomed their son, X AE A-XII, four months later.

In September 2021, the Tesla CEO opened up about the duo's decision to redefine their relationship, saying, “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms. It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in L.A. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.”

The songwriter later revealed the birth of her second child with Musk via surrogate. Their daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk — who they refer to as Y — arrived in December 2021.

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” she told Vanity Fair about not sharing the news earlier. “Whatever is going on with family stuff, I just feel like kids need to stay out of it, and X is just out there. I mean, I think E is really seeing him as a protégé and bringing him to everything and stuff.… X is out there. His situation is like that. But, yeah, I don’t know.”

That same day, Grimes confirmed that she and Musk had called it quits since the interview.

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and the Boston Celtics player sparked romance rumors in August 2016, making their couple debut one month later at Flo Rida’s birthday party in Miami. One year later, the Good American cofounder announced that the couple were expecting their first child together. 

Thompson made headlines in April 2018 when news broke that he had cheated on his then-pregnant girlfriend with multiple women. Kardashian chose to stay with her man and the pair welcomed their daughter, True, the same month. However, the pair split in February 2019 after the basketball player was caught kissing Kylie Jenner’s then-BFF Jordyn Woods.

Us exclusively confirmed in August 2020 that the pair were back together after quarantining together amid the coronavirus pandemic earlier that year. A source told Us at the time, “Khloé is hopeful that Tristan has changed for good and will continue to grow and be the great and loyal partner that he has been throughout their time together during the quarantine.”

Nearly one year, Us confirmed in June 2021 that the duo called it quits again but are “amicable toward each other and will continue to coparent” their little one. The insider added, “There was no drama that broke them up, things just didn’t work out between the two of them.” The breakup news came one day after Kardashian detailed her ups and downs with Thompson during part two of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion, revealing that she was taking things “day by day” with the athlete following his cheating past.

Cardi B and Offset

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper and the “Pure Water” singer began dating in February 2017, having their first date at Super Bowl LI in Houston. The pair tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Atlanta in September 2017 but didn’t announce that they were husband and wife until June 2018. Three months after their wedding, videos surfaced of Offset in bed with other women, but Cardi stuck by her husband’s side, with a source telling Us in December 2017 that she had “zero intention of leaving” him despite the scandal.

The couple announced they were expecting their first child in April 2018 and welcomed daughter Kulture three months later. The Grammy winner revealed in December 2018 that she and Offset had called it quits after more than a year of marriage. Offset issued a public apology in December 2018 to Cardi and pleaded with her via Instagram in hopes of getting her back. Two months later, Cardi reconciled with the Migos rapper and the pair walked the 2019 Grammy Awards carpet together in February.

In September 2020, Us confirmed that the “WAP” singer filed for divorce from her husband after nearly three years of marriage. Weeks later, Offset was spotted kissing Cardi in Las Vegas as she celebrated her 28th birthday. After her birthday bash, Cardi told fans during an Instagram live that she had been “starting to miss” Offset, which is why he was with her that weekend. A source told Us at the time that the “Be Careful” rapper “is still going through with the divorce,” but the estranged couple still “hook up occasionally.”

Scott Disick and Sofia Richie

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and the model were first linked in May 2017 following his split from Kourtney Kardashian. The couple moved in together in Calabasas, California, and Richie made appearances on Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Disick's E! show Flip It Like Disick. Us confirmed in May 2020 that they called it quits after the Talentless founder's brief stay in a Colorado rehab facility. Two months later, the pair appeared to be back on again, after being spotted at a 4th of July bash together in Malibu. Us confirmed in mid-August 2020, however, that they were “spending time apart.”

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

The model and Malik began dating in 2015 but called it quits on their relationship in March 2018. However, the duo were spotted kissing in New York City less than two months later. Us confirmed in January 2019 that the pair's romance had fizzled out for a second time. A source said at the time that Hadid “tried hard to make it work,” but Malik had “a lot of his own issues that she couldn’t help him get through."

The twosome reunited again in January 2020 in New York City. Us confirmed three months later that Hadid and the former One Direction member were expecting their first child together. The “Pillowtalk” crooner announced the arrival of the couple’s daughter in September 2020. “The love i feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding,” Malik wrote via Instagram alongside a photo of his little’s hand next to his. “Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, & thankful for the life we will have together x.”

Ryan Seacrest and Shayna Taylor

The America Idol host and model were first linked in March 2013. Since their start the pair has had many ups and downs. They split in December 2014 and reunited in 2016. Us confirmed in February 2019 that the radio host and chef called it quits again, but by September of that year, Seacrest hinted they had rekindled their romance. “It is our third time together,” the TV personality told Kelly Ripa on a May 2020, episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “It’s an eight-year run, but it’s our third run together. Listen, nothing’s perfect. You just keep trying until you get it right.” Nearly two months later, Us confirmed that the pair had split for the third time. “Ryan and Shayna decided to end their romantic relationship amicably some time ago,” Seacrest’s rep told Us in June 2020.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

Timberlake and Biel took a three-month break in 2011 only to reunite and get married in October 2012. “When they reunited, they had a conversation about taking the next step,” a source told Us at the time of their engagement. Us revealed the couple, who dated on and off for five years prior to their engagement, were expecting their first child in November 2014.The couple welcomed their son, Silas, in April 2015.

The “Man of the Woods” crooner and the Sinner actress hit a bump in their relationship in November 2019, when Timberlake was spotted holding hands with his Palmer costar Alisha Wainwright. A source told Us exclusively that the two were “just friends,” but the images caused fans to question the musician’s relationship status with Biel since he didn’t appear to be wearing his wedding ring. A month later, Timberlake issued a public apology for his actions, calling it a “strong lapse in judgement” and insisted that “nothing happened between me and my costar.” He also apologized to Biel and his family for the situation.

A source told Us in April that the coronavirus quarantine brought the pair “closer” and “having the main focus be each other and [son] Silas has been a good thing.” News broke in July 2020 that the couple secretly welcomed their second child.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

The “Swish, Swish” singer and Bloom first dated in 2016 for 10 months before calling it quits in 2017 — but not for long. After their breakup, they were spotted quietly hanging out in London in May 2017 and in February 2018, Us exclusively revealed they were hooking up again. In May 2018, Perry hinted that the two were official, saying she was “spoken for” during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.  The Lord of the Rings star proposed to Perry in February 2019. One year later, the "Teenage Dream" singer announced that they are expecting their first child together. The pair welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove, in August 2020.

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

Being known as one of the sexiest couples in Hollywood doesn’t always guarantee both parties are at their happiest. In August 2015, after 11 years together, five years of marriage and welcoming two sons, Noah and Bodhi, Fox filed for divorce from Green. However, the 90210 alum wasn’t willing to go without a fight and he whisked the Transformers actress on a romantic vacation to Hawaii — the same place where they got married in 2010. Us exclusively revealed that the pair had reconciled and during that time, Fox got pregnant with their third child, Journey. In March 2018, the Jennifer’s Body star told Us that getting quality time together was essential to their relationship so “you remember why you like the person that you had kids with."

Green confirmed in May 2020 that the couple called it quits after nearly 10 years of marriage. “I will always love her,” the California native said on his “…With Brian Austin Green” podcast at the time. “And I know she will always love me and I know as far as a family what we have built is really cool and really special.” The actor noted that he and Fox had been apart since the end of 2019, before addressing photos that surfaced of his estranged wife and Machine Gun Kelly a few days prior. “Megan and I have talked about him. They’re just friends at this point,” he said of the singer, whom Fox met while filming Midnight in the Switchgrass in March.

Kendall Jenner and Ben Simmons

The model and the NBA star were first linked in May 2018. Four months later, the first signs of trouble kicked in, with a source confirming to Us Weekly that the pair called it quits. “Kendall just loves being with her friends. That’s her main priority right now,” the insider told Us at the time. In the months after their initial breakup, the pair started “hooking up” again. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was even spotted hanging out with the pro athlete’s mom at a handful of Philadelphia 76ers games. Alas, come May 2019, the former couple split again. “Things have wound down between them,” said another insider. “They aren’t seeing each other anymore.”

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin

Baldwin adored Bieber way before she met him — she was a huge Belieber before the pair started dating in 2015, evidenced by tweets from over the years. In January 2016, the pair rang in the New Year together in Anguilla, with the model sharing a black-and-white photo of her arms around the "Friends" crooner while the singer shared his own steamy photo of them kissing. After Baldwin asked Bieber to settle down with her, the “Love Yourself” singer called her “someone I really love” in an interview with GQ in February 2016. They later went their separate ways, with Bieber spending time with Kourtney Kardashian and Baldwin being linked to Drake and Shawn Mendes . While the pair were "off," Bieber briefly reunited with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez until they broke up for good in March 2018. Us exclusively revealed that Baldwin and the “Sorry” singer were hooking up again in June 2018 when they were spotted hanging out in Miami — and a few weeks later, Bieber proposed in the Bahamas. The couple tied the knot at a New York City courthouse in September 2018 and had a big ceremony a year later in South Carolina.

Halsey and G-Eazy

The “Bad at Love” singer and the “No Limit” rapper sparked romance rumors in the summer of 2017 following his split from Lana del Rey. They made things Instagram official in September of that year, but after nine months of dating, the duo called it quits. Halsey confirmed the news to fans with an Instagram Story in July 2018. “I normally keep this kind of thing private but provided our public nature I feel the need to inform my fans. G-Eazy and I are taking some time apart,” she wrote. One month later, the pair rekindled their romance at an afterparty for the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, with a source revealing to Us in September that they were “figuring things out.” “They aren’t trying to hide the fact that their relationship is complicated,” the source shared, adding, “They were so serious before and now they don’t feel that same pressure to define it." The pair called it quits for good in October 2018.

Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Jen Harley

The Jersey Shore star and his girlfriend have had several ups and downs since they began dating in July 2017. Weeks after welcoming daughter Ariana in April 2018, they exchanged insults in since-deleted Instagram Story videos. In June, the pair got into a physical altercation while the MTV cast filmed season 2 of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation in Las Vegas. The following month, however, the pair appeared to be back together as they celebrated the Fourth of July with their family. Ortiz-Magro and Harley's relationship ended once again in October 2019 after an altercation that resulted in the MTV personality being charged with seven misdemeanors, including domestic violence. He accepted a plea deal in May 2020 and was sentenced to 36 months of probation.

Chris Evans and Jenny Slate

The Avengers star and Slate made their first public appearance as a couple at the New York premiere of The Secret Life of Pets in May 2016. However, Us exclusively revealed they were no longer together in February 2017. The former flames started hanging out again during the holiday season that year but in March 2018, the New York Times revealed during a profile of Evans that the pair had broken up once again.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

These two love birds call it quits so often it's honestly almost impossible to keep track. Bieber and Gomez were first linked together in December 2010 but didn't make their official public debut until February 2011. The couple's endless series of splits began in November 2012 and continued until 2015. Us exclusively revealed that the “Love Yourself” singer and Gomez had gotten back together once again in November 2017 and their brief rekindled romance saw the pair going on various romantic getaways. They later ended things in March 2018 and sources told Us at the time that the split was “mainly because of Selena’s mom and her disapproval of Justin.” While Gomez and Bieber may have gotten back together over the years, this time was likely their last — Bieber proposed to Hailey Baldwin in July 2018, writing on Instagram, “You are the love of my life Hailey Baldwin and I wouldn’t want to spend it with anybody else.”

Audrina Patridge and Corey Bohan

After dating on and off for five years, the couple ended their relationship in July 2014. In October that same year, the former Hills star was spotted out with the BMXer at a Halloween party and the two appeared to be back on. The reality star and Bohan married in an intimate Hawaii wedding in November 2016 after welcoming daughter Kirra, who was born in June 2016. Despite trying to make things work, Patridge filed for divorce on September 20, 2018, and was granted a temporary restraining order a week later. After accusing the BMX rider of aggressive behavior and citing various alleged domestic violence incidents, she went back to another former boyfriend: Ryan Cabrera.

Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran

After dating for a year, Brown told Us in 2012 that he wanted to be single and focus on his career. Fast-forward to July 2013 and the couple appeared to be back on, stepping out together numerous times and sharing lovey-dovey Instagrams with one another. Following the end of Brown's jail time in June 2014, the stylist threw the rapper a welcome home party. Their rocky relationship ended for good after Tran found out that Brown had a secret daughter who was born during their relationship — and the rapper didn’t go away quietly, sharing disturbing and threatening videos on social media in February 2017. Tran was later granted a five-year restraining order against Brown in June 2017. The rapper later extended an olive branch on March 24, 2018, when he commented “They look really good together” with a praying emoji on a photo of Tran and her boyfriend, Victor Cruz.

Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas

Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas met through Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie and dated for two years before calling it quits in April 2014. Following their split, however, the two were spotted together in September. A source told Us of the prince and Bonas: "Harry is the type to want to take breathers and then try again." The royal eventually married Duchess Markle in a highly publicized wedding on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in London. However, there were no hard feelings between Prince Harry and Bonas — the model even attended the nuptials.

John Mayer and Katy Perry

These two just couldn't make up their mind until officially splitting in 2014. Perry started dating Mayer following her divorce from Russell Brand in the summer of 2012. The two called things off that fall, only to rekindle their romance and then split again in March 2013. After reuniting a final time in June, the singers officially split in February 2014.

Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson

Christensen and Bilson spent time apart from each other during their on again, off again relationship. The couple met in 2007 on set of Jumper and got engaged in December 2008, only to call it off in August 2010. Three months later, however, the couple were back on. Us broke the news in September 2017 that the pair had officially called it quits. Bilson and Christensen welcomed their daughter Briar in October 2014.

Sienna Miller and Jude Law

On and off for three years, Jude Law and Sienna Miller put an end to their roller-coaster romance in 2006, after calling it quits on their engagement in 2004 following Law's affair with his children's nanny. The Factory Girl star later married Tom Sturridge — with whom she shares daughter Marlow — before they filed for divorce after four years together in July 2015. In 2016, Miller — who was later linked to Brad Pitt in 2017 — said of Law, “I care about him enormously.”

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama

Lovato remained coy about her relationship with Valderrama in the first few years of their romance, which began in 2010. But by 2014, the couple started to publicly address one another on Twitter and in Instagram photos. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer and Valderrama split in June 2016 after six years of dating, but they remained friendly. In August 2017, Lovato celebrated her 25th birthday alongside the That 70’s Show star. The former couple were later spotted showing major PDA during a lunch date in February 2018, where an eyewitness revealed they had their arms around each other. Despite being broken up, Valderrama visited Lovato at the hospital in July 2018, following her accidental overdose. “He seemed really down and looked sad,” an insider told Us at the time. “He stayed for around three hours.” The Ranch actor proposed to model Amanda Pacheco in January 2020 after eight months of dating. Three months later, Lovato revealed she was no longer in touch with her ex, but told Harper’s Bazaar that she wishes him “nothing but the best.”
