About

Matthew Lewis is a British actor best known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movie franchise. Lewis began acting at age 5, landing minor roles in shows such as Dalziel and Pascoe and Some Kind of Life (1996) before his time at Hogwarts.

Lewis first auditioned for the Harry Potter films as a fan of the books and secured the role after completing a screen test for director Chris Columbus. He starred in all eight films, playing the role of Neville Longbottom, an awkward but well-meaning friend of Harry Potter. The actor made his theater debut in a 2011 touring production of Verdict before acting in the last two installments of J.K. Rowling’s beloved franchise. Rowling considers Lewis one of the “Big Seven” cast members, alongside actors such as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

Lewis’s newfound mainstream success helped him to later land roles in projects like The Syndicate (2012), Our Boys (2012) and The Sweet Shop (2013). In 2016, he starred in the romance film Me Before You and appeared in the TV series Ripper Street. He starred alongside Margot Robbie in 2018’s Terminal.

In 2024, Lewis played Brett in the BBC One drama Avoidance. He is set to star in the drama Murder Before Evensong as Canon Daniel Clement.

Lewis tied the knot with Angela Jones in November 2018.
