Hischier, 27, was boating in the area at the time, when he spotted the family being pulled toward the dam and unable to get out on their own. Authorities were called and the Devils captain rushed to the scene, where a witness described his actions as “heroic,” according to Swiss outlet 20Minuten.

“In this situation, everyone is grateful for support, and we were all relieved that no one was hurt in the end,” Hischier told 20Minuten in a story published Thursday, July 9.

He hasn’t said much else about the situation, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 4, but Devils reporter Amanda Stein said the story might be “the most Nico story of all time.”

Hischier, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, was named team captain for the Devils in 2021, becoming only the 12th player in franchise history to have the honor.

The accident happened in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 8, when a vehicle traveling north struck the former offensive lineman while he was crossing the street, according to CBS News.

The GoFundMe states that Garza died in a “hit-and-run accident,” though that has not been confirmed. CBS reports the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and was “cooperative,” and that the incident is currently under investigation.

“Nobody knows such a big guy with such a big heart,” his aunt, Sonia Garza, told local CBS affiliate KBAK. “He was a great mentor to everybody. He was a big guy, so everybody automatically looked up to him. And then when they saw that he was good, they looked up to him even more.”

Garza enrolled at Sacramento State in 2019, redshirting his first year. His second season was wiped out entirely by the COVID-19 pandemic, but he finally took the field for the Hornets in 2021 and played three seasons.

After Webb’s rough game against the Blue Jays, the Giants were mired in a stretch that saw them lose six out of their last nine games. They got back on the winning track on Thursday by defeating the Rockies, 8-2, in the first game of a four-game home series.

Celebrity fans packed the sidelines of Madison Square Garden during the New York Knicks’ run to the NBA championship, and even more filed in weeks later for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding.

It now appears many had a risk assessment attached to them by the Garden itself, according to a story from WIRED on Thursday, July 9.

The outlet reported that more than 400 celebrities, including several who were at the wedding, have been assigned a risk score by an internal MSG database, ranging from “flag,” the lowest, to “banned from MSG.”

The designations came to light after criminal hacker collective ShinyHunters published a “treasure trove” of documents from the company, which included a database of almost 40,000 celebrities and public figures. About 1 percent of them were assigned a risk score.

Five attendees at Swift and Kelce’s wedding — Ice Spice, Selena Gomez, Benson Boone, Michael Strahan and Mariska Hargitay — were labeled “low risk.”

Low risk is the second-lowest tier in the database, and also includes diehard Knicks fans Edie Falco, Tracy Morgan and Ben Stiller. Medium risk comes after that and includes Lily Allen, Anna Wintour and Morgan Wallen. Freddie Gibbs, Lil Jon, DaBaby, and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie are all high risk, and rapper Lil Tjay has been banned from The Garden.

A spokesperson for Madison Square Garden refuted WIRED‘s story, saying in a statement to Us Weekly, “WIRED‘s reporting is inaccurate and false. MSG is pursuing legal remedies.”

The story did not mention Charles Oakley’s risk assessment despite widespread reports that he has been banned from MSG. An MSG spokesperson told Us in June that it would be inaccurate to say Oakley, 62, is “banned.”

The reasons for each characterization are unclear, but some seem to have been labeled as risks due to previous comments critical of Madison Square Garden or its CEO, James Dolan. A source told WIRED that Fat Joe was flagged as “medium risk” because of his association with Jadakiss, who once said of Dolan, 71, “It seems like he’s always more happier when the team sucks.”

Us has reached out to The Garden for comment.

WIRED also revealed that the database lists 32 political figures who have supported MSG in the past and “tracks some celebrities’” race, gender identity and sexual orientation. That includes 93 people labeled “LGBTQIA,” such as Ricky Martin and Phoebe Bridgers.

The report comes two months after WIRED ran a story delving into MSG’s so-called “surveillance machine,” which it alleges “obsessively tracked” a trans woman “over a two-year period, monitoring her movements through the venue down to the second.”

A report reviewed by the outlet noted the exact time that the woman took the escalator up to the concourse, paid for a drink and more, while also including the screenshot of a security camera capturing her hugging an usher. “I’ve never met James Dolan. I don’t know the higher-up leadership at Madison Square Garden. But, like, there does seem to be a bit of a pattern here,” Evan Greer, director of the digital rights group Fight for the Future, told WIRED. “They just seem overly interested in queer and trans people in their venue.”

One of the highlights of Lanning’s career came in 2008 when he became the U.S. downhill champion and qualified for the World Cup Finals in downhill. He finished 25th overall in the grueling discipline and placed 33rd in super-G.

Lanning retired a year later after a frightening accident during a race when a crash resulted in him dislocating his left knee and fracturing the C5 vertebra in his neck. Unable to return to competition, he transitioned to coaching, assisting the U.S. Ski Team.

Friends and fans shared their tributes to Lanning in the comments of the U.S. ski team’s post.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have known TJ through ski racing,” Ski Racing Media content director Katie Twible wrote. “His smile lit up every ski hill he was on, and he brought so much energy to the people around him. Today our ski community has lost someone special. My heart is with his family, his children, and everyone who loved him. 💔.”

“What a tremendous loss for the ski world,” former Swiss alpine ski racer Carlo Janka added. “He was an incredible athlete and an even more wonderful human being. My thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who knew him. 🙏😢.”

“With tears in our eyes and love in our hearts, I want everyone to know that my twin brother, Jamil, is peacefully transitioning to be with God,” Jamal, 36, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, July 7.

Jamil was a defensive lineman for the Scarlet Knights from 2009 to 2013, racking up 81 tackles and 8.5 sacks in his career. He and Jamal were both captains for Rutgers during their senior season.

After his college days, Jamil signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent but transitioned to the Arena Football League before ever playing an NFL game. He was working as the defensive coordinator at Red Lion Christian Academy in Delaware at the time of his death.

Jamil’s cause of death has not been revealed, but Jamal wrote that watching him fight, “has been one of the most courageous things I’ve ever witnessed. You never complained. You never quit. You stood 10 toes down through it all. A true soldier. A true warrior. You fought with everything you had until your very last breath. 💪🏾✅.”

‘A Bills Love Story’

Holiday Touchdown moved to Buffalo, New York, in November 2025 for a sweet rom-com inspired by the Buffalo Bills. In the film, Morgan (Holland Roden) and Gabe (Matthew Daddario) are childhood best friends and neighbors who team up to uncover the mysterious gift giver who’s been sending Morgan’s uncle an annual Bill-themed holiday present for decades.

Much like A Chiefs Love Story, the Bills version was filmed in Buffalo and at the team’s Highmark Stadium.

“They say that these houses are in the shadow of the Highmark Stadium, and they really are,” Roden told Us in November 2025, revealing the cast even got to tailgate with the Bills Mafia fans. “We got to go to a real game where we drank out of a bowling ball. We helped clean up the ears of the man that puts mustard and ketchup all over him. I was Q-tip Girl for him.”Filming A Bills Love Story also turned Roden into a proud supporter of the New York team.

Hallmark announced in June 2026 that the Holiday Touchdown was en route to Chicago for its third installment of the franchise.

“I absolutely love golf,” Kyle said. “Super competitive in it. I want to do well. I’m not really that guy that’s just like, ‘Oh, we’re out here. It’s fun no matter what. It’s beautiful.’ I actually want to compete and do well. I realize I’m not going to be a top 10 guy, but I have a goal for myself. And I just want to each year get better and better.”

When asked if it’s hard to come out on the course and try his hand at golf while being a star athlete in his own field, Kyle laughed at the idea.

“Well, that’s what’s so great about golf,” he explained. “Because it’s a whole new challenge. Having played football my entire life, I do feel like I’m at the top of the game there. This is just another new challenge. A new one for me to come out each day and try to get a little bit better. That’s what’s so great about it.”

“I don’t think you’re going into the Olympic space to be a millionaire,” Phelps, 41, admitted on the Tuesday, July 7, edition of the “Richer Lives” podcast. “I think you’re doing it just because you love the sport.”

The competitive swimmer has won more Olympic medals than any other athlete in any sport, with 28 total medals across four Summer Games. (Phelps also holds the all-time record for most gold medal wins with 23, in addition to his three silver and two bronze medals.)

Phelps parlayed his success into a media career that has included major endorsement deals and even his own video game — but that’s not a trajectory that many Olympians replicate.

“I think there’s a very small percent of Olympians that actually can make a living off of it,” he noted. “I was very fortunate to be one of those. I got to wake up every single day and do what I loved.”

The athlete recalled that there were “times [he] wanted to quit” swimming before his Olympics success, only for his mother, Debbie, to remind him of the financial realities of that decision.

“My mom’s like, ‘If you want to quit, do you want to go work a 9-to-5 job?’ I was like, ‘Good call,’” he recalled to host Vivian Tu. “For me, I was going to swim … eight to 10 times a week, that’s a job? I’m getting paid to do what I love.”

Phelps remembered feeling that his life was “all about sports” as a kid even though it “never really felt like a job.”

“I was always outside playing. I was having fun. I was being myself,” he said. “I was very lucky to find a career where I could just be me, my authentic self. I had a blast doing it.”

Later in the podcast, Phelps confirmed that he received an early education from a financial advisor at age 15. Now, he leans into endorsements where he is offered a financial stake in the companies he signs with.

“Over time, my agent got smart in trying to structure contracts in a different way. Whether it was me taking equity or me just taking cash,” he said. “Just having an agent that is able to structure deals in different ways, thinking long term. You’re invested in it. You want [these companies] to go massive. Instead of just getting a pile of cash, for me, I’m along for the ride.”

Phelps also touched on overcoming public controversies, including his two previous DUI arrests. (The Olympian entered a guilty plea to a charge of driving while impaired in 2004 and later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in 2014.)

He also temporarily walked away from the world of competitive swimming following the 2012 London Games, citing burnout and frustration with the sport. (He told reporters at the time that he “just wanted to be done with swimming and didn’t want anything to do with the sport anymore.”)

“At that point, I didn’t care [about the financial implications],” he acknowledged. “I literally came back to the 2012 Olympics because I had to. I had contractual obligations that I had to fulfill.”

He said that he was so disillusioned with the sport at the time that he’d “skip” a week’s worth of training on a whim.

“I was just stiff-arming the sport because I wanted a break,” Phelps confessed. “After my second DUI, at that point, I didn’t feel like I should be alive anymore. I felt like I didn’t deserve to be alive anymore.”

He continued, “At that point, I just became scared. I think that was the first time that I asked for help. I feel that for so long we would just kind of sweep it under the rug. Nobody wanted to talk about it … I almost wanted to create a generational shift. Make real change.”

“It’s not embarrassing to go to therapy. It’s not embarrassing to ask for help,” he added, pointing out how much he valued his sponsorship deal with online therapy portal TalkSpace.

Phelps ultimately returned to swimming for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, where he won five gold medals and a silver. He retired from the sport in August 2016.

The allegation first emerged on Monday, July 6, when Tobey’s Instagram account posted a statement via his Story, which read, “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :).”

Loren Waters is the sister of Spurs guard Lindy Waters III. Fans have speculated that Tobey’s girlfriend is the one who accessed the account to post it.

The next slide appeared to show photo booth images of Tobey and Loren kissing, with, “Me and the new girl,” written over the post.

The person behind Tobey’s account also changed the caption to one of his photos, which showed him singing the national anthem before a Spurs game to simply read “#cheater.”

Tobey’s social accounts have since been switched to private, but screenshots continue to circulate on social media.

The up-and-coming broadcaster began working for the Spurs in 2024. Before that, he worked for Denver’s 9NEWS and served as a play-by-play voice on Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.

The reported personnel change comes less than a month after the Spurs fell to the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals and two weeks after Tobey signed a multi-year extension to stay with the franchise.

“A season to remember 🤩,” he wrote via X at the time. “From calling 62 wins to watching this young team get all the way to the NBA Finals! Thank you to the @spurs players, coaches & fans! I’m excited to announce that I signed a multi-year extension to stay with the Spurs (on the ⛳️😆). I love this city!“

Former Spurs player and current TV analyst Sean Elliott, who worked alongside Tobey, congratulated him via X as well.

“Well deserved Strong Oak,” he wrote. “You have grown into your role so well, and I hope you have that seat for many years to come. It is a joy working with you. Those national anthems got you the new deal BTW.”

Shiver, 32, accused the university of intentionally violating the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, which is designed to help people find and review public records.

In the lawsuit, which was filed on Wednesday, July 8, Shiver’s lawyers accused the school of “arbitrarily and capriciously” breaking the law by intentionally withholding documents related to Moore’s firing. 

Moore, 40, was terminated in December 2025, after an investigation uncovered a years-long relationship between Moore and Shiver, a former University of Michigan staff member.

“The lawsuit filed today demands transparency and accountability from the University of Michigan, President [Domenico] Grasso and the Board of Regents,” Shiver’s attorney, Andrew Stroth, said in a statement.

The statement continued, “This public university paid [law firm] Jenner & Block $12 million to investigate the Sherrone Moore scandal and the abuse, Title IX and Title VII violations within the athletic department and Schembechler Hall, yet now refuses to release the investigation’s findings. It was important for our client to file this initial FOIA lawsuit to ensure the truth and facts come out.”

Stroth argued that the requested documents will show that the university and the athletic department “had knowledge of this pattern and practice of abuse against Ms. Shiver and others.” 

The lawsuit also claims that Shiver faced sex discrimination and was subjected to a hostile work environment during her time at the university. 

The University of Michigan declined to comment when contacted by the Detroit Free Press. 

Moore was originally charged with felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and misdemeanor breaking and entering after Shiver accused him of breaking into her apartment and threatening her. All of those charges were eventually dropped. 

In March, Moore pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of malicious use of a telecommunications device in context of a domestic relationship and trespassing.

Moore was sentenced to 18 months of probation in April, avoiding jail time. 

Days after Moore’s sentencing, Shiver revealed she became pregnant during their relationship.

During an interview on Good Morning America, Shiver explained that her unborn baby was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a genetic disorder that weakens muscle strength.

“Multiple doctors and experts told me that it wouldn’t be right or healthy for me to keep the baby,” Shiver said.

Shiver said Moore was aware of the pregnancy, allegedly telling her to “do what’s right for your body.”

The coach has been married to his wife, Kelli Moore, since July 2015, and the couple share three daughters. 

“He was an amazing person,” Braydon, 25, told reporters when he rejoined the team on Wednesday, July 8. “I’ve heard you say this about myself, and he always loved when you all said this, but there was never a bad day for Norm. His name was Norm. There was never a bad day for him. He was always happy, cheerful and willing to help anybody. He loved people. He did everything as perfectly as you could. He was very proud of what he had.”

Norm died after suffering a stroke while accompanying the Blue Jays on their trip to San Francisco to face the Giants. He was visiting some high school friends in the area at the time, according to MLB.com.

Despite being with the team on Wednesday, the team’s final day in San Francisco, Braydon will remain on bereavement leave until the Blue Jays’ next series in San Diego over the weekend. He called the past few days the “hardest” of his and his family’s life.

Braydon remembered his dad as someone who “liked to talk about” how he was also a good baseball player back in his day.

“I always gave him [a hard time] for that,” Braydon said. “My mom always tells him that I got my athletic ability from her. He played baseball and he loved baseball. Growing up, if it had a score, it was on the TV. He loved watching it and he loves all the guys. I don’t think that for the last two years, you’d see him not wearing Blue Jays gear. Not ever. No matter the occasion.”

Braydon is in his second MLB season and has performed well for Toronto, primarily out of the bullpen. He was not selected to the American League All-Star team and will instead travel home next week during the break to be with his family and remember his dad’s life.

“He always supported me in every single way,” Braydon said. “He did everything he could to make sure I achieved the dream I’d talked about since I was five.”

He also thanked the Blue Jays for their support as he processes Norm’s death.

“I just want to thank the whole Blue Jays staff for how amazing they’ve been supporting me and my family,” Braydon said. “Getting flights, hotels, giving me as much time as I needed and all of the nice messages.”

The Blue Jays are off on Thursday, July 9, before beginning their series against the Padres on Friday.

Roney died on Sunday, July 5. He was 39. Details about his death remain scarce, but friend Jonathan Wall said Roney died in a “tragic accident” in a social media post. 

“Jack was also a proud Wolfpack swimmer and someone who meant a lot to me personally,” Holloway added. “He was my volunteer coach the first year we won the men’s ACC title after I came back to NC State — a year I will never forget. Jack died just days after he and his wife, Maresa, celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. The couple share five children: Gunnar, Scout, Beau, Archer and Crew.

“You were strong in every sense of the word…mentally, physically, and spiritually,” she wrote via Facebook on Tuesday. “A record holding swimmer, an example of discipline and perseverance. Jack’s sister Katie Roney Corum called her late brother “an amazing man who loved his wife and kids more than anything in this world.”

A GoFundMe has been arranged in Jack’s honor, which has raised more than $166,000 at the time of publication. 

“His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, and the love he shared with his family and community,” the fundraiser reads. “Now, Maresa faces the unimaginable challenge of raising her children alone. The loss of Jack has left a void in their lives, and the family is navigating a new reality without his guidance and support. As Maresa works to provide for her children, she needs help with daily expenses, childcare, and ensuring her kids have the opportunity to pursue their education and dreams.”

“Tough to find the words. I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who believed,” Pulisic, 27, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday, July 9. “The support carried us all the way through. It simply wasn’t good enough from us in the end and I wanted to deliver so much more.”

He continued, “I still feel blessed to be a part of this team. The memories this summer will last a lifetime. It’s just the start for us and for this sport in America. 🇺🇸.”

Team USA lost to Belgium 4-1 in their round of 16 soccer game earlier this week. Pulisic, specifically, had exited the match in the 59th minute amid an injury.

“I just totally twisted my ankle and my knee in one play,” Pulisic told reporters after the game, per ESPN. “I mean, whatever. I have time to rest. It’s just unfortunate way to finish.”

I didn’t quite have the moments I was hoping to and to try to help us to really push and get over this next step of beating a really good team. I’m disappointed with myself, of course, but I’m going to try to stay positive. I did a lot of good things and the team did as well.”

While Pulisic left the game following ankle and leg injuries, the pro athlete still had hope that his teammates could have turned the game around.

Following Team USA’s loss, U.S. Men’s Soccer issued a statement directly to fans.

As LeBron James searches for a new team to play with next season, Savannah, 39, called his haters “crazy” in a conversation with co-host April McDaniel on the Tuesday, July 7, episode of their “Everybody’s Crazy” podcast.

At LeBron’s age, it’s only logical that the talk of retirement would follow him wherever he decides to go. He was asked about the possibility after the Lakers lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, where he said it would depend on whether he could still commit to giving 100 percent.

“I think for me it’s about the process,” he said. “If I can commit to still being in love with the process of showing up to the arena five-and-a-half hours before a game to start preparing for a game, giving everything I got, diving for loose balls and doing everything that you know that it takes to go out and play.”

One month before the wedding, McCain suggested that reports that Swift and Kelce, both 36, would get married at Madison Square Garden were a potential smokescreen. 

“The politics person in me thinks this is a Friday dump planted to distract from the fact that she’s likely getting married in a very private ceremony in Rhode Island this weekend,” McCain claimed via X on June 5. 

That ended up not being the case, of course, as the A-list couple got married in front of a star-studded crowd that included Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, Ed Sheeran, Julianne Moore and Karlie Kloss. 

McCain has never shied away from talking about Swift. In 2024, McCain said she doesn’t “wake up in the morning like, ‘My God, Taylor Swift’s music’s the best thing ever.’'”

The political commentator’s remarks came in the thick of Swift’s Eras Tour, which became the highest-grossing tour of all-time. 

“She has, respectfully, nowhere else to go but down at this point,” McCain said on her “Citizen McCain” podcast. “She’s TIME magazine’s Person of the Year. This tour is so big, all these things.  … I do think when she’s done touring, giving us a mild break from being in the news cycle as much as she is would be helpful for her, and us as commentators. McCain’s exhaustion came from feeling like Swift is one of the “only topics that Americans are allowed to talk about and are in the news all day long.”

Pulisic, 27, made little impact during the USMNT’s run, leaving the Belgium match in the second half with an injury. Team USA lost 4-1. Pulisic failed to score in the tournament.

“I’m starting to look back and … it’s more than just a trend now. It is,” Donovan, 44, said on the Tuesday, July 7 episode of his “Unfiltered Soccer” podcast. “Like, when the games are easy, and it’s a home qualifier, and it’s Jamaica, yes. But in the big moments and the big games, he just hasn’t. … I’m just saying it factually. He is who he is at this point.”

He continued, “This was a game where you needed him to go, ‘Give me the ball, I’m gonna stick it in the back of the net, it’s 2-2, let’s go.’ And he just didn’t. And he wasn’t even close to it.”

Donovan played in three World Cups during his playing days, scoring five goals over 12 career matches. Looking back on his experience on the sport’s biggest stage, he could not empathize with Pulisic reportedly asking to be subbed out of the game.

“And in fact … there’s reporting that he asked to get subbed out of the game. I can’t confirm that, so I don’t know if that’s true or not,” Donovan said. “But the reality is, he came out of a World Cup knockout game at home, with his leg still intact. Because … you would have had to f***ing drag me off the field. And I would have punched the doctor in the face and said, ‘You’re not taking me off the field. Put whatever you need to put in me, and I’m staying on the field.’”

As Donovan said off the bat, Pulisic’s inconsistent playing time has become a trend. Last summer, he took heat for skipping the Concacaf Gold Cup tournament to rest, only to still be seemingly unhealthy for the World Cup.

“He took the time off in the Gold Cup so that he would be ready for this season,” Donovan said. “And he would be fit and healthy and firing on all cylinders. And the reality is, he’s scored one goal since December. He’s not played well for the national team, not played well for Milan … and he’s been injured.”

Donovan isn’t the only U.S. soccer legend to call out Pulisic. Former women’s national team star Carli Loyd took issue with him saying that he now has time to “rest” with Team USA out of contention.

“You rest when your playing career is over,” she wrote via X. “Period.”

Loyd’s former USWNT teammate Sydney Leroux agreed, sharing Pulisic’s comment via X and writing, “He rested the entire World Cup.”
