Sarah Louise Palin was born in February 1964 in Idaho. Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council before becoming the state's first female Governer in 2006.
In 2008, Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose Palin as his running mate, making her the first female vice-presidential nominee of the Republican Party. Since the McCain-Palin defeat, Palin has resigned as governer, saying she wants to focus on her family.
Palin is a mother to five children, one of whom has been the center of controversy ever since the 2008 election. Palin's teen daughter Bristol announced she was pregnant with then-boyfriend Levi Johnston. Since their first grandchild, Tripp, was born, the Palin family has been in a war of words with Johnston.
The former politician has most recently written her memoir.
