Lady Gaga: I've Always Felt Like "a Freak"

Wednesday – November 25, 2009 – 9:30am

Lady Gaga insists she doesn't wear those outrageous, over-the-top getups merely for attention.

"I want to create a space for my fans where they can feel free, and they can celebrate," she says on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday (check your local listings). "I didn't fit in in high school, and I felt like a freak. So I like to create this atmosphere for my fans where they feel like they have a freak in me to hang out with, and they don't feel alone."

In high school, the Yonkers, N.Y., native, 23, says she felt like an outcast because she wanted to be like "Boy George." She adds that it "took a long time to be OK" with who she is.

"I want my fans to know that it's OK," she says. "Sometimes in life you don't always feel like a winner, but that doesn't mean you're not a winner."

She also reveals she penned her tune, "Speechless" for her dad, who just had open heart surgery.

"He had an aortic valve transplant," she says. "I was on the road, and I was having a lot of trouble missing my parents and wanting to be with my dad. So I wrote this song called 'Speechless' for him to sort of beg him to get this surgery, and it worked."

I used to not like her but lately hearing her talk she seems like a genuinely nice person. I can't hate someone that has a kind heart.

I thought she said on t.v. once that she's from NYC. Every bio I read about her claims she's from Yonkers, NY. What's up with that?

I am wondering if you dressed the same in high school as you do now. You wonder why the other kids thought you were a freak? It's because your clothing is not from the planet earth. Everything you do is a desperate cry for attention. It clouds your talent, girl!

I agree...the ONLY thing holding me back from being a fan of her is the violence in her acts. The only thing. I cannot get on board with that type of thing, and until she stops making that part of her routine, I will not buy her songs, or contribute to anything of hers. I like her music, I really do...but I cannot enable that sort of thing.

Lady Gaga is refreshingn and i dont believe she should tone it down at all. Her dress and costume is amazing and imaginative, her voice is beyond stunning, her video clips are real works of art and her philosophies, ideas and beliefs are in the right place, especially the link between her music and being an artist and the the morals and values she believes in. Shes a real inspiration, and people wanting to complain about her over the top dress sense or her gory "violent" stage performances, should really grow up, appreciate it as drama and something that exceeds the normal cliche pervformances of Britney Spears and the likes, because there are far worse things out there than feigning death on stage. Seriously, if you went to see a play and someone feigned death or produced violence on stage, would you complain?

Lady GAGA is INCREDIBLE!!!! I Love Her!!!!! She has an Amazing Voice, is an Awesome Dancer, and the fact that she isn't afraid to be creative, however she deems it, is way Sexy to me!!! If you understood what she was really trying to 'say' in her songs, then you would understand that she isn't being 'violent'. She uses tons of metaphors to describe her feelings, which are then played out in her videos and live performances. She is a genius in the creative arts as far as I'm concerned. To each his/her own if you don't like her, but you don't have to be hateful...

I'm the same age as her, and I feel that her quirks and attitude reflect mine in a way... may be the demographic of complete 90's saturation... having spent time with the same pop culture and history and absorbing it as peers, we gather a general census... most people my age agree... no rules, no god, no boundaries.
