With more #1 hit singles than any other female artist in history, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone embodies modern pop music success.

Born in 1958 in Bay City, Mich., her 1984 album Like A Virgin was the first of her super-successful controversial hits. She's also stared in films like Desperately Seeking Susan and Evita.

Madonna's many love affairs have been as diverse as her multiple personality transformations. Married to actor Sean Penn in the '80s, Madonna also had significant relationships with Warren Beatty, Dennis Rodman, and personal trainer Carlos Leon, with whom she had her daughter Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon.

In 2000 she married director Guy Ritchie and they had a child, Rocco Ritchie. In October 2006, the singer adopted toddler David Banda from Malawi.

In July 2008, rumors surfaced that Madonna was having an affair with Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez, although the singer denied the allegations. However, in October 2008, Madonna’s rep confirmed that the singer and Guy Ritchie were divorcing after over seven years together.

Though Madonna’s first attempt to adopt Chifundo “Mercy” James, also from Malawi, was denied, a judge approved her appeal to adopt in June 2009.
